There are times in life when we are standing in a place, in a moment, that we may not realize is going to influence us profoundly.
One of these times in my life occurred during a trip to Washington State. It was my first time flying across the country and seeing a different ocean. I was in awe of so much of the scenery. There was a moment, though, that stood out above all others. It happened in the Olympic National Park – Hoh Rainforest. The trees were so magnificently large. I stood next to a tree, inhaling deeply, and then attempted to wrap my arms around the tree. I could only reach a quarter of the way. That was such a peaceful moment.
That moment reminded me of a few things. 1. I am only a tiny part of this world. 2. This tree started out as something small and grew into a giant, withstanding so many years and so many storms. 3. We need to immerse ourselves in nature more often than not. It soothes the soul in a manner that only nature can.
What has been an influential place/moment in your life? Were you standing alone, or was someone there to support you?
I must admit, I’m no hippy, but I will hug a tree any opportunity that I get. Take some time to take a deep breath outside. Walk a nature trail, go to a lake or river, or just watch the clouds for a few minutes. It may be just the medicine you need in that moment.
Until next time – hug the tree.
